James Beard Finalist Chef de Cuisine Cleophus Hethington has put together a menu that celebrates the culinary traditions of the African diaspora. Located in The Block, Benne on Eagle takes its inspiration from a Ghanian Adinkra symbol known as Sankofa, roughly translated as “go back and get it.” From the name to the décor to the menu, everything about this restaurant is inspired by the revitalization of a neighborhood that was once known as Asheville’s Black Wall Street. You can get a classic biscuits and gravy dish but there are also tons of sandwich options as well. Founders Jason and Carolyn Roy opened up their first location in 2013 with aim of combining their love of Southern cooking and commitment to keeping things local into the most perfect biscuit creations. Between its almost mythological mountain culture and a long history of attracting the quirky and creative, this North Carolina gem is full of unique things to do whether you love the outdoors or like to wander streets full of French-inspired buildings. Especially when we as the customer didn't really do or say anything to warrent such a response.There truly is nowhere quite like Asheville. I get people have a bad day, but in the restaurant industry, you need to put a positive face on, then vent behind closed doors. I could have really done without that passive-aggressive interaction, but aside from, that I'd definitely recommend this joint to anyone. Another guy came out from the back, grabbed it and loudly and snarkly proclaimed, "This doesn't go here, but I guess you think it does." and took the cup and walked away. He waited a bit to ask about where to put his cup, but everyone was super busy and no one came over to us, so he left it on the counter. My husband had his original coffee cup in his hand, which he mistakenly brought back to the ordering counter. As we were leaving, we got our to-go cups for our coffee, as instructed by our server. Both were fantastic! The biscuits are fluffy, little clouds of heavenly goodness. Everything with a smile! I ordered the Southern Scrambled, while my husband got the Fried Baloney. The guy delivering food to the table was equally as kind and helpful. super friendly and helpful with questions. The guy working to take our order was awesome. biggie, given it was Thanksgiving week and many are on vacation.
We waited in line for a bit, which was no. We stumbled into Biscuit Heads after reading the great reviews.
